Good Reads: International Education

Over time, discussions arise over LinkedIN about macro trends in international education and Japan demographics. Here is a list of the papers that I sometimes discuss with colleagues for later reference. Not the end all be all of research papers but still food for thought.

Note: I would like to find a paper discussing wealth concentration in a smaller middle class in Japan. My theory is that there will be a transition of wealth from the older generation to the current. However, unlike transitions of wealth before, the current generation of middle class have smaller families and perhaps are thereby more likely to spend more on education for fewer children.

Demographics & Education of Japan – OECD

Interesting discussions about how Japan can handle their national debt but also balance providing pensions and healthcare for the increasing population of elderly. However, you also don’t want to ‘rob Peter to pay Paul’, so need to provide high quality education to the decreasing younger population of Japanese while also managing the transition of young people from the countryside to cities.

International School Research Papers

Discussions about trends in international education. Note the TES magazine article is a short summary of some of the 2019 ISC research that is paywalled and with TES you can only access one free article. Click carefully I guess.

The research papers are interesting since they identify the macro trends of growth in Asia for international schools and how the market will be potentially consolidated over time. The last paper looks at potential tensions between goverment educational policy and the increase in international schools. I am wondering if we will see more government back inclusion of international schools such at the Jeju Global Education City project and Japan’s Ministry of Education IB Consortium project in the future.
